How to Properly Maintain Tiles

Tiles and grout are porous materials, which means stains and dirt may get trapped in them, causing them to look ugly. If the tiles are installed in the shower and other high moisture areas, then high is the possibility that mold, mildew, and bacteria will thrive in it too.

This is the reason why it’s important to clean tiles regularly. You don’t want soap scum to get stuck in the grout. It’s not just unsightly, it’s also a potential health hazard. However, the usual way of cleaning the floor, such as vacuuming and mopping don’t do any good for tiles. Tile cleaning cedar park is something that a professional can help you with.

The Easy Way of Cleaning Tiles

The best way to clean tiles is by scrubbing it. There are a lot of cleaning compounds available for tiles these days, although the best options are always the eco-friendly versions. You may also make your own cleaning solution. Some experts recommend combining white vinegar and baking soda. No matter what you use for cleaning tiles, avoid using soap as it leaves sticky residues that attract dirt and dull the tile.

Tile and grout cleaning should always be done with care. If you intend to use the vinegar and baking soda solution, be sure that you have white grout on your floor and not the colored types. Vinegar can make color grout fade permanently. Also, be careful not to use the same solution to natural stone tiles, as it may cause etching.

Tile and Grout Sealing

Sealing the tile and grout after cleaning them is a good practice. Doing so preserves the clean look of your tile. Again, there are different types of tile and grout sealer available in the market. You have to choose the right type and use it accordingly. Also, be sure that the tiles are dry before applying the sealer.

Most tile and grout sealers can last for two years, sometimes even more. If you choose to use the penetrating sealer, then remember to reapply it after three years at the maximum. Doing it sooner is highly recommended. If you want to use the membrane sealer, then it has to be reapplied after two years. Both sealers protect the surface of the grout and tile.

Some tiles are not glazed. If this is the case, then you can’t use any of the tile sealer indicated above. You can only use it on the grout. If you use it on the tiles, then the tiles will get stained. If you know for a fact that your tiles are glazed, then you may use either a spray or brush to apply the sealer over its surface. You may also apply a second coating if so desired.

These are the easy ways to maintain tiles. However, it is best that you consult with a professional so you’ll get the best possible results. Failure to do so may lead to ruining your tile instead of cleaning it.
